How to post to Instagram from your desktop

We’re big fans of Instagram. The mobile app is one of the fastest growing social networks out there, but its functionality is limited if you’re using a PC or Mac. What can you do if you want to upload photos to Instagram from your desktop? Sure, there are ways to transfer images to your phone – Dropbox, connecting the devices, Bluetooth – but User Agent Switcher makes it even easier by allowing you to use Instagram on your desktop exactly how you use it on your phone.

User Agent Switcher is a Chrome extension and is simple to install. Just search for User Agent Switcher Chrome in Google and click on the first result. You will then be prompted to add the extension to Chrome and once you’ve done that, you will see what I can only describe as a ghost’s head wearing thick glasses on the top right corner of the browser bar – that’s the extension.

Open Instagram on your desktop. Click on the ghost head and you will get a drop-down menu. Click Android, or whichever operating system you use on your phone, and it will then prompt you to click KitKat (that’s just the latest Android OS). You can also choose from iOS and Windows Phone (as well as all the different internet browsers).

Once you have selected your operating system, you will see the Instagram interface has changed; it will now look the same as on your mobile screen. Ta-da – you will now be able to use Instagram the same way you use it on your phone. This means you’ll be able to quickly upload images or videos directly from your desktop files to your Instagram profile.

This is a nifty little tool I found out about at a workshop in November 2017 organised by the Cork Chamber and delivered by Damien Mulley.
